Maarja Nuut is a singer and violinist: and an utterly compelling, often hypnotic performer. Her unique sound and vision, one that readily crosses genre borders...

Listen: Maarja Nuut & Ruum first track released

Posted on Monday, 16th July

The latest signings to our 130701 imprint, Estonian duo Maarja Nuut & Ruum precede details of a collaborative album with the release of single 'Kuud kuulama', which had an exclusive first play by Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music this weekend, being picked out as her 'Sunriser' track and getting played on her shows on both Saturday and Sunday. Mary Anne described the track as "an utterly spellbinding piece of music" and you can listen to 'Kuud kuulama' here. You can also watch a video, made by Benjamin Wigley, here.
More information about the album, to be released through 130701 this autumn, will be announced soon.

Maarja Nuut & Ruum sign to 130701

Posted on Tuesday, 12th June

We are excited to finally announce the signing to our 130701 imprint of Maarja Nuut & Ruum, an Estonian duo whose music merges violin, voice and contemporary electronics. Relocating a deep-rooted vernacular folk tradition within a restless, fractured digital present, they forge a dynamic and unique space for themselves, and sounds like little else around right now.
We first stumbled upon Maarja back in March 2015, when she floored us with her performance at a FatCat-curated showcase at Tallinn Music Week, and came very close to releasing her 2016 album, 'Ue Meeles', but for one reason or another it wasn't to be. Happily, following further conversations over the past six months, Maarja has signed a deal with 130701 for her collaborative project with fellow Estonian, Ruum (akaHendrik Kaljujarv). The pair have been touring and recording together over the past year or so and the first recorded fruits of their collaboration will be released later this year, alongside a full set of UK / EU tour dates.
For now, you can read more about the duo here and check out a teaser of what's to come, with this neat 3-minute live teaser video.
